For senior Kylee Lund, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Carroll has provided opportunities far and wide – but she’s about to really go the distance. Lund was recently selected to be a Gilman Scholar and awarded $5,000 to study abroad in the United Kingdom, France and Italy.

The highly competitive Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship offers undergraduates of limited financial means an opportunity to study abroad and enrich their education. In this case, it will allow Lund to participate in a multicultural program that focuses on the history and development of the fashion industry.

“I am honored to be able to call myself a Gilman Scholar," said Lund. “I look forward to expanding my knowledge about other cultures, which will help to improve my patient care and my future working as a nurse.”

Lund also thanked Benjamin A. Gilman International for the opportunity to pursue further cultural competence and career development.

Gilman Scholarship applicants are reviewed based on the following criteria: impact on program and destination of student’s academic and career trajectory, community impact abroad and upon student’s return home, academic preparedness, diversity of background and experience and commitment to proficiency in a critical need language.

Since 2001, the Gilman scholarship has enabled more than 25,000 Americans from diverse backgrounds to engage in a meaningful educational experience abroad. The program has successfully broadened study abroad programs in the U.S. while emphasizing countries and regions where fewer Americans traditionally study. The scholarship is a program of the U.S. Department of State with funding provided by the U.S. government, supported in its implementation by the Institute of International Education.

“There are so many exciting CCE possibilities for Carroll students to experience diverse cultures internationally,” said Megan Baker, international CCE advisor for the Office of Global Education. “This scholarship helps ease financial burdens that students take with them while abroad. We encourage any qualifying student interested in broadening their studies on a global level to consider applying.”
