Megan Mares ’09, a trade brewer supporting the Great Lakes region for MillerCoors, was recently featured in an episode of OnMilwaukee’s FoodCrush podcast. Mares, a certified beer expert, is one of the 100 advanced cicerones in the world—that’s similar to a wine sommelier, but for beer. The episode discusses the future of beer, as well as Mares’ path from her human biology major and early job as an infectious disease researcher to her position in the MillerCoors tasting room.
In a previous interview with the
Office of Alumni Engagement, Mares noted: “I was a human biology major and use a lot of biology,
chemistry and microbiology every day. I really think that having a balance of great mentors, interesting classes and a small student-to-instructor ratio helped me to be successful. Overall, Carroll was great because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I graduated—I just knew that I loved biology. The school was amazing at offering various courses in the field that allowed me to discover all aspects of science, so that I could start to figure out what I wanted to do when I left school.”
