Art + Design (A+D) is dedicated to comprehensive, multi-disciplinary learning experiences to evoke student freedom of expression and discovery of innovative solutions. The program focuses on investigation of complex ideas, experimentation with contemporary technologies, analog design, craftsmanship, and portfolio development. Art + Design promotes the exploration of diverse media and the development of a personal art practice – both essential to lifelong engagement in the arts, artistic growth, and career success. Students graduate as inspired, empathetic, visionary artists ready to contribute to their chosen professional path.

Program Specializations

Students are required to choose a specialization within the major: Art Education, Graphic Design, or Studio Art. After students complete a unified foundation experience, they complete specialized-specific requirements to ensure preparedness for a competitive job market.

About the Art + Design Major  

An inside look at the Carroll University Arts program.

The Art + Design program is a unified and exploratory approach to teaching and learning in Studio Art, Art Education, and Graphic Design. The major is distinguished by multi-disciplinary teaching methods in both analog and digital media across all visual specialiations, and by a common set of foundation courses that build a strong student community. Concept development and creative risk-taking are introduced early in the curriculum. The immersive and experiential learning experiences throughout the curriculum equip graduates for a career of their choice in the arts.

Students will also engage in collaborative and experiential projects such as gallery installations, senior exhibitions, and client-based design challenges. Students will achieve either a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts Degree depending on their specialiaztion.

 

What Can You Do with an Art + Design Major?

Carroll’s Art + Design majors are prepared for success in a variety of visual art fields within their chosen specialized area of study. The Art Education Specialization prepares students to teach K-12 art in public and private schools. The Studio Art Specialization can lead to careers in art therapy, arts management, museum/gallery work, and fine or commercial artist. The Graphic Design Specialization prepares students to be graphic designers in a variety of settings in both motion and print graphics

Jane Hamilton '74 witnessed the impact of scholarships while a student at Carroll by seeing how it helped a friend fund her education. Those memories later motivated Jane to give back to current students by establishing the Hamilton Family Foundation Endowed Scholarship for students in the arts.
