Biography
Dr. McCarthy teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in business, applied business analytics, and healthcare administration. Her industry work includes positions focusing on quality improvement, information technology, medical informatics, electronic health records (Cerner and Epic), and data analytics. In addition to teaching and pursuing research interests in healthcare informatics and analytics, Dr. McCarthy performs outreach through the Analytics and Business Intelligence Consortium (ABIC).

What is your teaching style?
Most of my teaching is based on stories – the story of a business, the story of a decision that needs to be made using analytics, etc. In addition, I use a variety of teaching approaches based on the students in a course, as well as the content being covered. Most of my approaches involve hands-on and/or interactive activities that require students to try out the concepts they are learning in class. Finally, I try to tailor examples and case studies based on student interests.
Why do you do what you do?
I care deeply about students, their goals, and their lifelong learning. Each time I interact with students, my goal is to prepare them for their future careers as well as to be curious, lifelong learners who will succeed in an ever-changing world. There’s nothing better than partnering with students to support them in achieving their goals.
What should students know about you?
I enjoy getting to know my students and what they are passionate about. I’m here to help guide and mentor students in their learning and future careers, so I’m open to answering questions, having conversations about jobs and goals, etc. In addition, every time I speak with a student, I find myself learning something – so don’t be surprised if I ask questions to learn more.
