Sarah Brown Wessling, the 2010 National Teacher of the Year, will be the keynote speaker at Carroll University’s undergraduate commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 13.

Brown Wessling is the 2010 National Teacher of the Year and a 25-year veteran of the high school English classroom. She is the director of the National Teacher of the Year Program which she was a part of as a facilitator and designer of professional learning for 12 years prior to taking over the program. She is proud to be a National Board Certified Teacher since 2005 and most recently served as the vice chair for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Executive Board.

She is a frequent speaker and facilitator of professional learning around the country and an avid blogger and writer. She also served as the teacher laureate for the Teaching Channel for many years. Brown Wessling is author of Supporting Students in a Time of Core Standards and maintains a website at: sarahbrownwessling.com. She is mother to Evan, Lauren and Zachary who keep her grounded and laughing. She’s an avid runner and reader who loves live music, traveling and everyday adventuring. She works full time from Des Moines, Iowa.

“We are extremely privileged to welcome Sarah Brown Wessling as our 2023 undergraduate commencement speaker,” said President Cindy Gnadinger. “Her work as a teacher, leader and mentor in the field of education is truly impressive and we are excited for our graduating class to hear her inspirational message.”

Carroll’s undergraduate commencement ceremony will be held Saturday, May 13 at 10:30 a.m. on Main Lawn (100 N East Ave).

Approximately 850 graduates will receive diplomas at Carroll’s Commencement ceremonies, including more than 600 who are expected to earn bachelor’s degrees and nearly 250 who are expected to earn graduate degrees.
