Why did you choose to attend Carroll University?
I chose to attend Carroll University because it offered great 2+2 programs such as NDT, that would allow me to earn a bachelor's degree while getting hands-on experience in a clinical setting. Carroll creates a great community that fosters students with small class sizes and the ability to create great student-teacher relationships. Carroll’s location is also great, being about an hour from Madison and only thirty minutes from Milwaukee, giving amazing opportunities for clinical sites and work partnerships before and after graduation.
What made you choose your academic major or area of study?
I have always seen myself helping others in my future, specifically in a career in healthcare. In my time as a CNA I cared for many patients that had suffered strokes or had seizure disorders. Seeing how patients and their families were affected by their medical conditions was an eye-opening experience that led me to research how I could possibly positively impact them on their journeys. Through this experience I further discovered that I found the brain and epilepsy to be extremely interesting. I began to research regarding my interests and found neurodiagnostic technology! NDT also provides a great mix of patient care and the world of technological advancement, which was perfect for my interests. Also knowing that I could provide care while continuously learning every day about the fascinating details of the brain was a perfect match!
How has what you’ve learned prepared you for your future?
Through clinicals, I have been introduced to settings and experiences that are preparing me for my future career. This, combined with traditional classroom and lecture experiences will help me transition into the working world seamlessly. This program has helped me build a great foundation of neurodiagnostic technology knowledge to continue to build on as I continue my time at Carroll University. A blend of technical skills and personal dedication to learning material has prepared me to evolve into a confident technologist.
What opportunities have you had to work closely with a faculty member and what impact has that had on your education?
Working closely with Tabitha Althoff, Program Director of Aurora’s School of Neurodiagnostic Technology, has given me great opportunities involving clinical and job opportunities. Her approach to teaching and small class sizes allow for individualized learning opportunities and ensuring no one is left not understanding a topic. She is extremely supportive and provides great resources as program director that are helpful in setting up job opportunities and other learning opportunities, such as conferences and meetings with doctors to discuss previous cases. She also allows for adaptive learning styles which give every student an equal opportunity to learn and understand material on a deeper level.
What’s one unique experience you’ve had relating to the coursework for your academic major or area of study?
The ability to have hands-on clinical experience going into graduation is such a great benefit to Carroll’s programs. Having the opportunity to work with those already in the field and to learn from them has been a truly amazing experience that has left me with excitement about my future in NDT. Deepening my understanding of concepts learned in the classroom in real life practice has helped me see firsthand how my future career will impact patients. Strengthening my patient communication skills and overall confidence has given me the opportunity to provide patient-centered care that I will continue to feel passionate about as I enter the field.
How has Carroll enriched your growth as a person outside of the skills you’re learning in the classroom?
Carroll has encouraged me to reflect on my values and how what I have learned can enrich my personal life as well. Especially in a healthcare-focused program, I’ve developed a deeper sense of empathy, patience, and compassion for others. I’ve learned that being a good technician isn’t just about technically learned skills, but it is also about connecting with people and making them feel heard and respected. Helping patients feel comfortable while running an exam can create a trusting relationship that can ensure patients get the best care possible. Additionally, balancing coursework, clinicals, and personal responsibilities has strengthened my time management skills. I’ve learned how to handle stress, stay organized, and push through challenges, which has helped me grow into a more responsible and determined student and individual.
