Why did you choose to attend Carroll University?
The small class size and strong sense of community that previous students have experienced were the main factors for me. A close friend of mine had gone through the program a few years prior, and she had nothing but excellent things to say about the education and faculty. Once I had my interview and visited the campus for the first time, I knew this was the place I was meant to be.
What made you choose your academic major or area of study?
I wanted to find a profession that combined my passion for the sciences and the human body with community service, and Physician Assistant fit that description perfectly. We provide a level of care that is equitable to physicians in many cases while having the flexibility to work in a variety of healthcare settings and patient care roles.
How has what you’ve learned prepared you for your future?
The rigorous coursework during the first year laid a strong foundation for extensive medical knowledge that has been expanded on during the second year clinical rotations in a variety of specialities and patient care environment. I have felt well prepared to answer questions from preceptors and patients about a variety of topics, as well as utilizing critical thinking to navigate complex patient situations.
What opportunities have you had to work closely with a faculty member and what impact has that had on your education?
Volunteering with faculty members at the Waukesha Free Clinic and other community organizations like La Casa de Esperanza has been an excellent way to bridge the knowledge we learn in the classroom with hands-on experience that benefits those in need. By dedicating their time and energy to these efforts, they have shown me the importance of always serving others, regardless of the circumstance. I want to continue this sentiment in my future practice.
What’s one unique experience you’ve had relating to the coursework for your academic major or area of study?
Throughout the first year, we had several special events where outside instructors were brought in to teach us different skills like working with a medical translator, while also providing opportunities to practice those skills with patient actors. These experiences were crucial to our learning because these topics cannot be simply taught in a lecture or single presentation. They require hands-on exposure from those who are experts in their respective fields, and Carroll's PA program does an excellent job of doing just that.
How has Carroll enriched your growth as a person outside of the skills you’re learning in the classroom?
Carroll’s small classes have given me genuine, lasting connections with peers who’ve broadened my perspective and encouraged personal growth far beyond academics. Their support and challenges have shaped how I understand myself and others. At the same time, the rigorous workload has strengthened my ability to manage multiple responsibilities and meet high expectations, preparing me for the balance, resilience, and accountability that adult life requires.
