Major: English and Writing

Why did you choose to attend Carroll University?

I chose to attend Carroll for a couple different reasons. First, the were able to cater to my financial needs and helped me out a lot. Secondly, the school was smaller and prided themselves on being able to help students and work closely together. That is something that was a big part of what I wanted for my education. I did not want to become on of a hundred students in a classroom where the professor did not even know my name and care about helping me succeed.

What made you choose your academic major or area of study?

I chose this major because I have always had a love for reading and writing. I always dreamed of being able to publish a book I have written one day and I decided that I wanted to get into this field to do so. My love of reading has grown exponentially throughout my years at Carroll.

How has what you’ve learned prepared you for your future?

I have gained lots of experience in a lot of different areas. I learned how to publicly speak in front of a professional audience with the Scholar to Student event. I also spoke about my essay for my Capstone class. I have some experience in putting together an undergraduate journal. Many of these experiences have taught me what I like to do and what I don't. I am very grateful for these experiences and I can use them in my future career.

What opportunities have you had to work closely with a faculty member and what impact has that had on your education?

I have worked closely with Dr. Novotny for the spring semester this year as I am a Humanities Fellow. I have loved working with Dr. Novotny and I have learned so many things. I have a deeper insight as to what goes on behind the scenes of a class, and learned a bit about the philosophy around it. It has helped me connect with students and be able to handle teaching.

What’s one unique experience you’ve had relating to the coursework for your academic major or area of study?

The most unique experience I have had within this major is the capstone conference. The whole semester was really interesting and difficult. It was a great challenge and I loved the topic I ended writing about. It allowed me to become closer to people in my major while also challenging me on my writing capabilities. There was a lot of work put in and at times I really struggled, but in the end I am proud of pushing myself through.

How has Carroll enriched your growth as a person outside of the skills you’re learning in the classroom?

I have learned how to live somewhat by myself as an adult which has come in handy. I have struggled with anxiety and depression since I was probably 13 years old. It was almost debilitating some days and I struggled a lot. Since coming to Carroll, I have found a new confidence in myself and learned that I can talk to people I don't know or grab food by myself. Some days can be hard for me, but overall, I am able to be a functioning individual 90% of the time. Being in the environment has allowed me to come out of my shell a lot, and I am very grateful for that.
