Major: Health Science with an Emphasis on Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Why did you choose to attend Carroll University?

The main reason that I attended Carroll University is because of the small class sizes that allowed me to personally connect with my professors and instructors. It was important to me to be able to feel like I wasn't just a number at a university and instead a school where professors cared about my success more than just myself. In addition, I chose to come to Carroll for this major specifically because of its reputation and association with the St Luke’s and UW health hospitals.

Choosing Carroll University was the best decision I made for my academic success. This school prepares you in the best ways as you start the next chapter of your life. Carroll is an amazing and welcoming place to get involved, make friends that last a lifetime, and have some of the best years of your life!

What made you choose your academic major or area of study?

I have always had a passion for healthcare and helping others, but I was never interested in the common healthcare professions such as nursing, PT and OT. I did research and found out about becoming a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer at Carroll. After shadowing a sonographer, I knew this was the right path for me. Knowing that Carroll was affiliated with two of the top ultrasound schools being St. Luke’s and UW health, this made the decision even easier. This profession allows me to play an essential role in diagnosis, which is an important role in someone's healing journey.

How has what you’ve learned prepared you for your future?

Carroll University and St Luke’s DMS rigorous programs have prepared me extremely well. Although challenging at times, this program has instilled me with confidence in my skills and provided numerous opportunities to learn so much about the field. The amount of clinical hours with hands-on experience allow me to be fully prepared to start my career post graduation.

What opportunities have you had to work closely with a faculty member and what impact has that had on your education?

One of the main reasons I choose Carroll University is for the small class sizes. Small classes allow for personal connections with all of the professors and instructors. I have been able to approach all faculty members with concerns and questions, and I have always felt like my academic goals, as well as my personal well being, mattered to all of them. They wanted success for me just as much as I wanted it for myself. This has impacted my education because it is important for me to know that the faculty supports me in all that I do.

What’s one unique experience you’ve had relating to the coursework for your academic major or area of study?

As part of all academic majors, Carroll prides itself on encouraging students to go on a cross-cultural experience to gain insight and so much knowledge about a culture unlike your own. As part of my program, I was able to spend 2 weeks in Greece, learning about healthcare and the history of Greece. This overall helped me to become a more well-rounded individual and provided me with a once in a lifetime experience.

How has Carroll enriched your growth as a person outside of the skills you’re learning in the classroom?

During my years at Carroll and St Luke’s DMS program, I have gained knowledge both academically and personally. I have been pushed out of my comfort zone, grown in my confidence and abilities and have found what I'm truly passionate about. This program truly makes you learn so much about yourself and truly has helped me become the person I am today. All of this will not only help me in my career, but also in my day to day life in the future.
