Job Title – Classroom Literacy Support Assistant

Purpose of Job

We are seeking enthusiastic and dependable college students to provide targeted literacy support to elementary students. In this role, you will work directly with children, one-on-one
or in small groups, to strengthen foundational reading, decoding, spelling, and comprehension skills using established classroom strategies and hands-on learning materials. Training will be provided. Student will be responsible for travel to and from the Community Service site; public bus route is available from Carroll to the location.

Duties and Responsibilities

Depending on student needs, you will support readers across four main skill levels:

  • Pre-Reading & Emerging Readers: Help students with letter-sound recognition, phonemic awareness games (identifying beginning, middle, and ending sounds; rhyming), and word-building activities.
  • Early Decoding & Word Study: Guide children through blending short-vowel words, reading consonant blends and phonetic words, and mastering sight words / puzzle words.
  • Developing Readers: Practice phonograms and vowel teams, read through decodable books or passages, and help students transition from choppy reading to smooth fluency.
  • Fluent Readers & Comprehension Support: Serve as a reading buddy to build chapter-book stamina, practice multisyllabic decoding, and facilitate comprehension strategies (retelling, answering questions, inference, and making connections).

Classroom Materials & Hands-On Tools
You will be trained to work with specialized classroom resources and reading tools, including:

  • Sandpaper letters and Moveable Alphabets
  • Spelling drawers and Waseca drawers
  • Words Their Way spelling systems
  • SRA reading programs
  • Reading envelopes featuring Roll & Read games and decodable passages

Job Qualifications

Enrolled Carroll student interested in education, child development, linguistics, or related fields.

  • Strong reading, spelling, and communication skills.
  • Patient, encouraging, and reliable when working with young learners.

Time Commitment: Flexible schedule, requiring just a few hours per week. Shift Times: Literacy blocks take place during Morning Work Cycles (typically 8:00AM – 10:30 AM) and Afternoon Work Cycles (typically 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM), Monday through Friday.
