Kevin Guilfoy
Dr. Kevin Guilfoy is the recipient of the 2019 Benjamin F. Richason, Jr. Faculty Award.
This award requires recipients to demonstrate excellence in teaching, research and educational innovation. Guilfoy, associate professor of
philosophy, earned a BA from the University of Vermont and an MA and Ph.D. from the University of Washington. He joined the Carroll University faculty in 2004 and will be promoted to full professor in July 2019.
Guilfoy chairs the “Pioneering Mind” Task Force, charged with developing the framework to implement the Carroll vision of an integrated
PioCore education. He is widely recognized as one of the top scholars in his field of expertise—12th century medieval logic. He produces “top-shelf” research and was invited to present at Toronto’s Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies. Guilfoy has published an article in the “Perspectives in Religious Studies” journal and three chapters in three different edited volumes.
In describing his ability to translate complicated ideas to students, one of his colleagues says Guilfoy is “one of the rare people who can create a challenging classroom environment where students actually want to learn.”
Another says: “Kevin’s teaching and scholarship is one of the finest examples of what a Carroll education in general, and the PioCore in particular, can offer our students… (Kevin is) a scholar who is an expert in his field and who seriously engages with students and challenges them to expand their intellectual and cultural horizon in a deeply respectful and supportive manner within a clearly defined framework.”
The award will be presented at
commencement on Saturday, May 11.
