Ted H. Baker '71

2002 Distinguished Alumnus Award for Professional Achievement

Ted Baker’s 30-year career in the securities industry includes experience as an institutional equity position trader, senior vice president of marketing at Warburg Paribus Becker and operations positions at two major regional brokerage firms. He retired as Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of Pershing Trading Company L.P., a bank of The New York Securities Group Company.  

Ted graduated from Carroll in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and economics. He was employed by Loewi & Company as a customer service representative from 1971-1973 and at Robert W. Baird from 1973-1975 as a margin representative. He joined A.G. Becker as a trader in 1975 and worked there until 1991.

In 1991, Baker began his tenure with Pershing Trading Company, a NASD member firm which provides services and technology for investors. Pershing Trading Company is a division of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette Securities Corporation, a Credit Suisse First Boston Company. He served as Director of Pershing Securities in London for 10 years and as President of Pershing Trading Company from 1999-2001. He served as Chairman and Chief Operating Officer from 2001-2003 until his retirement in 2003.  

Ted was also a board member and Vice Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange from 1987 to 1991 and again from 1996 to 1999. While serving at the exchange, Ted was a member of the Executive Committee and was Vice Chairman of both the Finance Committee and Business Conduct Committee. Ted served two terms as Chairman of the Options and Derivatives Committee of the Securities Industry Association. He was also a member of the advisory committees of the Chicago Board Options Exchange, NASD, and Montreal Stock Exchange. His last board position was with the Options Clearing Corporation

Baker has been a board member and vice chairman of the Board of Governors of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange. He served two terms as Chairman of the Options and Derivatives Committee of the Securities Industry Association. Additionally, he served on the advisory committee of the Chicago Boards Options Exchange, NASD and Montreal Stock Exchange.  

His affinity for Carroll was reaffirmed being elected to the Board of Trustees in 2002. Also in that year, the new Ted Baker court was dedicated in Van Male Field House. Currently, Ted is engaged in aspects of the trading business as Chief Executive Officer of Olson Global Markets, located in Providence, R.I.
