The world is code. Today, everything from your car to your phone to your toaster runs on computer software. And it all needs computer science professionals to design and program the software that keeps this high-tech world running. As a result, the demand for computer science professionals is projected to far outpace most other jobs. Carroll offers a computer science education that puts an emphasis on mastering the technical skills of problem-solving with the latest software development practices while honing the critical thinking abilities you’ll need to excel and keep pace in this quick-changing landscape.
About the Computer Science Major
Carroll University’s Computer Science major prepares you to design, build and reason about the systems that power today’s digital world. Graduates pursue careers in software engineering, data‑driven industries, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity and emerging technology fields—roles consistently ranked among the most in‑demand and best‑paying professions.
At Carroll, you’ll work with contemporary software tools, widely used programming languages and modern computing platforms while gaining hands‑on experience with databases, networks and cloud‑connected systems. Dedicated computing resources and specialized equipment are available exclusively to computer science and information technology students, supporting both coursework and independent projects.
All students majoring in computer science complete a required internship, ensuring real‑world experience before graduation. Through this experience, students build professional skills in résumé development, interviewing, teamwork and software development within industry settings. Internships are typically paid and many students receive full‑time job offers from the organizations where they intern.
Coursework emphasizes problem solving, system design and adaptability, skills that translate across domains such as business, science, web and mobile applications, and interactive systems. Students learn multiple programming paradigms, modern software development frameworks and core software engineering practices used in professional environments. Students are encouraged to combine the computer science major with a minor or second major in mathematics, AI, or the sciences, to further strengthen technical depth and career versatility.
