Why did you choose to attend Carroll University?
I chose Carroll University because it met all my unique expectations. It offered the opportunity to earn a Master’s degree and dual certification when I wasn’t sure which path I hoped to pursue professionally. It offered a hybrid program that allowed me the flexibility to complete coursework at my own pace but also provided the monthly in-person classes where I could have support and discussions with other faculty and colleagues. The MAT program provided the balance I needed while having a family and working and also a program that I was able to complete in less than 18 months. It checked all the boxes while providing what I consider a great education.
What made you choose your academic major or area of study?
I chose this major because I had already earned my Bachelor’s degree. I decided I wanted to go back to school to be a teacher but was undecided if I wanted to do elementary education or special education. The MAT program provided me the opportunity to not only go back to school to be dual certified, but also earn a Master’s degree right away rather than a second Bachelor’s degree
How has what you’ve learned prepared you for your future?
This program had classes that were relevant to what I have seen taught in an elementary school classroom. More importantly, the instructors were incredibly knowledgeable and provided their own first experiences that made them relatable. They also presented the material in engaging ways that modeled what we can do in our own classroom. They shared so many different resources that I have referenced outside of Carroll University. The amount of time we spent in the classroom for observation and practical hours each semester helped set me up for my semester student teaching and my time in classrooms since graduation.
What’s one unique experience you’ve had relating to the coursework for your academic major or area of study?
One unique experience I had was taking a field trip to Prairie Springs Environmental Education Center. I enjoyed seeing the nature center and holding class in a different setting. I also appreciated taking a nature walk and being able to tie in standards. It was such a neat experience and opportunity to show how fun learning can be outside of the classroom. It’s something that can be appreciated for all grade levels and certainly even as an adult.
How has Carroll enriched your growth as a person outside of the skills you’re learning in the classroom?
Carroll has provided a great support system. As a non-traditional student out of school for several years, the small class sizes and supportive faculty made me feel welcome and comfortable to share and stretch myself and build new friendships.
