Major: Management and Leadership
Minor: Healthcare Administration

What made you choose a management and leadership major?

After taking the Leadership and Personal Effectiveness class, I felt as though the management and leadership major was an excellent fit for me. The class allowed me to practice leadership behaviors while bettering myself. Through this course, I realized my mission is to make others’ lives better. My major allows me to turn my mission into a career. Additionally, in high school I always enjoyed business courses but could never decide which business class was my favorite. My major allows me to take a variety of management courses to have a better understanding of different departments in the business setting. I also really like the flexibility the major allows me to have. Because of the business courses required in the major, I will have the knowledge to apply for many different roles in various businesses and organizations once I graduate.

What is your career objective?

Currently, I want to work in the human resources department of an organization. Working in human resources will allow me to support employees and management personnel in order to foster organizational success. If I decided that I wanted to move from the human resources department to another role, I could easily do so with a degree in Management and Leadership.

How has what you’ve learned in your courses so far prepared you for your future?

The courses I’ve taken at Carroll have allowed me to prepare for my career. Each of the business courses have been very informative and have provided the background necessary for entering the business world. The best part about the business courses is that it isn’t just about textbook material; the professors emphasize the real-world application. I have also found that much of the information I’ve learned has carried over into other classes. This is important because it shows how applicable and diverse the curriculum really is.

What opportunities have you had to work closely with a faculty member and what impact has that had on your education?

I took the leadership and personal effectiveness course online over the summer and had a positive and memorable experience because of Professor Mary Ann Wisniewski. Every assignment that I turned in had a kind and helpful comment on it from her. Knowing that she took the time to read my work and feeling that she genuinely cared about the students enrolled in the course made me enthusiastic about the class. Having this relationship with her not only makes me excited to go to class, but serves as a reminder that great things are destined ahead with a degree in management and leadership.

What is the most memorable experience you’ve had in your education at Carroll?

The most memorable experience I had at Carroll was in my Introduction to Business course. The professor was discussing business practices, and he mentioned how Jelly Belly sells “Belly Flops,” which are jelly beans that have the wrong shape or color. He told my class that next time, he would bring in a bag for us to sample, and he remembered to do that! This exhibits how caring and fun the professors and environment are at Carroll.

How has Carroll enriched your growth as a person?

There are so many ways at Carroll to get involved. During my first year at Carroll, I had the opportunity to be on the executive board for a new club called Future Healthcare Executives. My role as secretary has allowed me to practice leadership skills while connecting with fellow members of the club. This club has also provided me with several networking opportunities that will only help me in the future.

If you were recommending your major to a prospective student, what would you tell them?

I would tell a prospective student that because management and leadership opens so many doors for possible careers, you really can’t go wrong with the major. If you are interested in personal development and business, then Management and Leadership is the major for you!

How has financial aid made a difference in your life?

Yes, my hard work and dedication to school work in high school has allowed me to receive the Trustee Scholarship. I have also received scholarships from organizations outside of Carroll. I am extremely grateful for my generous scholarships, especially from Carroll, because it has allowed me to focus on my classes without having to worry about finances.

What’s your favorite place to study on campus?

My favorite place to study is in one of the Hastad Hall study spaces. It’s quiet, and I get the most work done there! I also like looking out the windows to see the activities going on around Carroll’s campus.
