Major: Music Education (Instrumental emphases)

What made you choose this major?

I have always been interested in pursuing education, and I became heavily involved in band the end of middle school and throughout my high school career. I participated in the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra my freshman year of high school, and the Youth Wind Orchestra of Wisconsin throughout the rest of my high school career. It was in participating in these outside bands that I realized I had a passion for teaching music.

How has what you've learned prepared you for your future?

Learning the theory of music has helped tremendously, because to play and teach music to the fullest involves understanding why and how the music does something.

What opportunities have you had to work closely with a faculty member and what impact has that had on your education?

I come from a relatively small high school and small town, so going somewhere where you can be comfortable in the classroom was very important to me. I think you receive a much better education when the professors and faculty know you personally and really know how to help you achieve what you want out of your education.

What's a unique experience you've had relating to the coursework for your major?

I work for the Wisconsin Philharmonic through Carroll, so this experience allows me to see a professional conductor work with the orchestra and see someone conducting outside of the classroom.

How has Carroll enriched your growth as a person outside of the skills you're learning in the classroom?

Although music majors have one of the most intensive loads for classes, you are still able to explore other subjects such as history or business. Although my primary focus is on wind ensemble, I am still able to explore other types of music such as the pep band or jazz band, just to have some fun with music while still learning a lot. I would recommend that even though a lot of your life will revolve around music, take some time to try other things and make music fun so it does not become a chore to practice or do homework.

Why did you choose to attend Carroll University?

I am very happy with my choice of attending Carroll University. The professors are fantastic and the smaller class sizes create a close relationship with anyone you work with. All the people are great here and you really begin to feel like you are at home.

Is there anything else you'd like to share about your experience at Carroll University?

College is scary, but the staff and professors do everything they can to make you comfortable and make sure you really understand what they are teaching.
