Why this major? What made you choose it?
Healthcare is such an expansive field, offering unique opportunities in more ways than one could imagine. Couple this with the rapid pace at which the industry is growing and it isn't hard to see why I chose to major in healthcare administration. The opportunity to lead and work side by side with highly skilled and intrinsically motivated healthcare professionals is just one of the many things that led me to pursue this degree.
What is your career objective?
In the future, I hope I can look back on my career and say that I was able to pursue my entrepreneurial dreams, accelerate the success of those around me, and create a life for my family. Whether it’s as an executive of a large organization or owning a corporation of my own, I seek to develop myself, my team, and ultimately the community I serve through leading and innovating.
How has what you’ve learned in your courses so far prepared you for your future?
The healthcare administration courses have been so unique in their immersive discussions, group work, and critical thinking exercises. As we learn to analyze and approach the biggest issues facing healthcare today, the courses go above and beyond, providing an intimate environment that encourages the growth and utilization of desirable skill sets present in all healthcare leaders. While healthcare can be very complex, my courses will certainly leave me with a competitive edge and a deep understanding of the issues I will face in the professional world.
What opportunities have you had to work closely with a faculty member and what impact has that had on your education?
The small class sizes here are a perfect fit for the way that I learn best and were a determining factor in why I chose Carroll’s program. Forming strong relationships and utilizing them to succeed seem to come naturally in the classroom atmosphere at Carroll. My relationship with my advisor and professor, Sarah Esveldt, is a shining example of this. Not only has she equipped me with the necessary skills to learn and grow, but she has offered valuable insight as an advisor, business professional, and ultimately as a person who truly wants to see those around her succeed.
What is the most memorable experience you’ve had in your education at Carroll?
During my education here at Carroll, the most memorable lecture I’ve had to date was when we had a guest speaker and healthcare executive, Lee Young Anne, come in to talk for Healthcare Financial Management. Her story really stuck with me as it was very similar to mine and others alike. She even started her first job in the healthcare industry doing exactly what I do in my internship today. She showed us that no matter what path you decide to take, as long as you create and maintain strong relationships and have a good work ethic, you can be successful. Her background in operations, sales, and management really gave a great look into the many possible roles and how they all rely on each other for success.
How has Carroll enriched your growth as a person?
Carroll has provided me with experiences I will never take for granted. The idea of having an opportunity to double major and still obtain a minor in an area of study I find extremely valuable accentuates the room this university leaves for its students to explore and expand their horizons. To go even further, the curriculum that encompasses these courses has led me to go out and leave my mark on the community all while broadening my cultural perspective on the issues that face our generation.
If you were recommending your major to a prospective student, what would you tell them?
If I were recommending this major to a prospective student, I would simply let the numbers do the talking. Employment of healthcare occupations is projected to grow 14 percent from 2018 to 2028, adding approximately 1.9 million new jobs. Healthcare careers are also projected to add more jobs than any other occupational group. To anyone interested in business, healthcare, or both, you should absolutely consider this field. Not only will you be in a rapidly growing industry that presents endless opportunities, you can sit back at the end of the day knowing that your work is truly benefiting society.
How has financial aid made a difference in your life?
I am indeed a recipient of scholarships granted by Carroll and my financial aid has made a large impact on me being able to attend this school and pursue my career. More importantly, I have three other siblings that are planning to go on to higher education, so I look at this scholarship not only as a means to achieve my personal goals, but also as a huge factor in leaving more opportunities down the line for my siblings.
What’s your favorite place to study on campus?
Out of all the places I put in hours of studying, I would have to say my favorite place is the library. Not only does it provide an environment in which people are there to better themselves, but you are more than likely to run into some of your closest friends and classmates who are quick to give you a hand. Not to mention Stone Creek Coffee close by… It's truly a life saver for caffeine junkies like myself.
