Majors: Global Studies and Business Administration, directed towards International Law
Minor: German

What made you choose these majors?

Being an immigrant from the European island of Malta has made me aware of the intricacies and complex construct of international relations, from an early age. In an age where cultural lenses meld together and wrest power away from stale world-views, studying globalization demands more attention than ever before. Given my predisposed role in the international arena, and a drive to better the world for all those who rely on its security, pursuing international law was a no brainer for me!

How has what you've learned prepared you for your future?

My courses, simply put, are requisites for anyone desiring a substantial literacy concerning global affairs. Spanning from business courses directed towards fostering an appreciation for international markets to political science classes aimed at developing one's ability to interact with all forms of theory and governance in the world, Carroll has offered me courses that not only changed my perception of my future but what I want to make the world's future look like!

What opportunities have you had to work closely with a faculty member and what impact has that had on your education?

Carroll's ability to place all students within any class of his or her choosing, complete with all the attention and personal training a student could ask for, is an amazing catalyst for personal growth and achievement, as I can confidently say! One experience, rather a series of positive experiences have shaped my understanding of this concept. Dr. Lilly Goren has opened the floodgates for professional and analytical thought for me, in particular. Dr. Goren has not shied away from sharing her wealth of knowledge and experience in the fields of political science and legal interpretation with her students. She has made me aware of several internships, research positions and, perhaps most importantly, the opportunity to have my work be put in front of publications and academics in my field. Quite frankly, the ability to get to know professors and learn everything you can from them is extremely important to a Carroll education.

What's one unique experience you've had relating to the coursework for your major?

Definitely the public policy course I took as a sophomore. Tapping into the actual process of legislation that lays the foundation for laws of any kind was a revelation to me, as I could distinguish between the varying actors of policy creation as well as the forces and factors swirling around our conversations concerning laws and those who create them. This class was extremely important to me as I quickly learned to develop my critical reading skills and improve on both knowledge of the creation of laws, and its history.

How has Carroll enriched your growth as a person outside of the skills you're learning in the classroom?

I am double majoring and investing in a minor, so obviously those questions pop up invariably; "How do you do it?" "Do you ever sleep?", and so forth. The answer is really simple! Yes! The class structure and format of classes allows students to work on campus, volunteer, join clubs and social groups all while being the best they can be in their academics! I have found the time to work two different jobs on campus, participate in athletic clubs and special interest groups i.e. founding club soccer and participating in radio. Within my major, I would always recommend to find something that you love, not like, and go all out for it! To be successful in something like law you have to be passionate and driven to succeed and there is no better way to practice that mindset than in clubs!

Are you happy with your choice of Carroll University?

I believe in many ways, Carroll is at the fore of what I want to do with my life. Carroll has a rich history of academic excellence, with its alumni going out into the world to improve humanity every day. Being a part of that was a huge draw to me, and the small class sizes established a comfort I know would not have been afforded to me at any other school. I am extremely happy with my choice, and want to thank all the people that helped me get here!

Is there anything else you'd like to share about your experience at Carroll University?

Make the most of everything that comes your way! Whether you come into college looking to volunteer as much as possible, meet people, and network, or if you want to dive right in to the career of your dreams, make everything work for yourself! Once you allow yourself to become passionate about something, it will make you even more passionate about life, and everything you could ever want, you will make happen because you've worked for it, and Carroll is the perfect place to make that happen!
