Major: Actuarial Science

What made you choose this major?

My love for mathematics and probability lead me to this great career choice. I was drawn to the challenging, yet very rewarding, process of becoming an actuary.

How has what you’ve learned prepared you for your future?

Carroll has not only prepared me by enhancing my technical and professional skills, but also providing me with the personal skills required to become successful in this field. I’ve learned how to effectively communicate the difficult terminology and process of actuarial modeling to a non-actuarial audience.

What opportunities have you had to work closely with a faculty member and what impact has that had on your education?

Having a small class and a close relationship with the professor is very beneficial for an actuarial science major. Actuaries need the personal skills in order to succeed in management roles, and having the experience of working closely with a professor is similar to working with a small team.

What’s one of the most unique experiences you’ve had relating to the coursework for your major?

There have been many unique and fun lectures I’ve been through, but the one that stands out to me most was the discussion of “The coolest math equations in the world” during Calculus 2. I learned that renowned mathematicians gathered at a conference to discuss the most unique and useful equations in the world. Ranked at number two was a really complex formula we were using in class. But ranked at number one was 1+1=2. Without it, math would not exist.

How has Carroll enriched your growth as a person outside of the skills you’re learning in the classroom?

During my time at Carroll, I have been involved in three different campus organizations: Actuarial Science Club, Best Buddies and the Delta Rho Upsilon Fraternity. I‘ve held multiple executive positions for the fraternity, which is quite time consuming but rewarding. Carroll has given me the opportunity to grow as an individual through the opportunities these organizations have provided, and the balance between my involvement and my studies.

Why did you choose to attend Carroll University?

It’s been one of the best choices I’ve ever made. Carroll has helped me set up my future, and has allowed me to succeed through passing four of my actuarial exams as well as having the opportunity to work three different internships. My college experience has been full of life-lasting friendships, amazing opportunities and the start to a successful career.

“Carroll has helped me set up my future.”
