Dog Classroom Policy
Terminology
Handler. The single designated person who is present and handling the dog while in the Dog Classroom. This person is deemed legally responsible for the dog while in the Dog Classroom.
Handler/dog Team (Team). The Handler and one dog for whom they are responsible while in the Dog Classroom.
Dog Classroom Use Requirements
- Dogs must enter and leave the Dog Classroom while on leash
- Handlers are responsible for bringing water and a bowl for their dog
- Handlers must clean up after their dog
- Handlers must be inside the Dog Classroom the entire time that their dog is present
- Handlers must not allow their dog to harass people/animals walking past the Classroom
- (e.g., Handlers should interrupt and manage their dog from barking at people walking past the Dog Classroom fence or request additional space from other Handlers waiting outside to use the Dg Classroom)
- Each Handler may only oversee one dog in the Dog Classroom a time. In other words, if two dogs are in the Dog Classroom, then there must be two Handlers.
- A maximum of three dogs and a maximum of three people may use the Dog Classroom at a time. Whether or not additional Teams may enter the Dog Classroom in addition to the first Team is determined by the first Handler to enter.
- Handlers are responsible for any damage caused by their dog
- Dogs must have up-to-date vaccinations and a current city dog license
- Bites should be reported to CU Public Safety, who will enact the CU Bite Protocol, which includes reporting the incident to the Waukesha County Environmental Health Department.
- The Handler further agrees that CU is not held liable for any damage or injury caused or encountered by people or animals using the Dog Classroom.
Priority
Carroll University classroom activities always take priority for use of the space, with priority in the following order:
- ANB 444 Lab/ANB 250 Lab
- ANB 444 Lecture/ANB 250 Lecture
- ANB 370 Lecture
- Other ANB lectures/labs
Beyond direct classroom activities, the Dog Classroom space will be prioritized to
- ANB444 students with ANB444 dogs outside of classroom time
- Student handlers with PioPuppies
- Student, faculty, or staff handlers with service animals
- Student, faculty, or staff handlers with service dogs in training
- Student, faculty, or staff handlers with emotional support animals
Individuals not listed on the above lists are not authorized to use the Dog Classroom space. For example, faculty, staff, and community members are not allowed to use the Dog Classroom unless they have ANB faculty approval for the courses listed above.
