"Charting an Institutional Course in Turbulent Higher Education Times"

As a former mayor of a college town and an attorney now representing multiple colleges and universities, Jim Newberry will discuss the legal, financial and operational challenges confronting America's institutions of higher education and how community engagement can serve as a guiding light for Carroll University and other institutions of higher education.

Jim Newberry is a member of Steptoe & Johnson PLLC where he chairs the firm's higher education team. He formerly served as mayor of Lexington and as vice president and general counsel at Georgetown College. At Georgetown, Newberry served on the executive cabinet, and he was responsible for the development office functions, including alumni affairs, and for the legal affairs of the college. He has also served the University of Kentucky as a member of the Board of Trustees and as an adjunct professor of political science. He currently represents a number of institutions of higher education in a variety of matters with a particular emphasis on Title IX compliance. Newberry serves as a member of the Legal Services Review Panel at the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities and as a member of the United States Chamber of Commerce Education, Employment & Training Committee. Newberry received both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Kentucky.
