While growing up in suburban Illinois, John Heavey ’14 imagined a future as a lawyer, maybe a politician, perhaps a journalist, and acting was also in the mix. With so many career aspirations as a high schooler in 2009, social media was not yet on his radar as something he could do to make a living. That, though, is exactly what he is doing today after accepting a position as a program manager of new products at Facebook, now Meta.

Promise Bruce ’10 worked since the age of 16 and never knew the feeling as an adult of what it was like to be without a job until he was suddenly laid off. The job loss hit just before the pandemic of 2020—with 1,100 jobs cut by his employer in a round of layoffs—but the lockdown added to the strain of what he might do next. His first step: Talk to mom. Her advice was simple but solid.
