Transfer Credit FAQs
How does Carroll determine which courses are equivalent?
Equivalent courses are reviewed and approved by Carroll’s department chairs. When evaluating a course, they consider several factors, including the course description, textbook, learning objectives, assignments, number of credit hours, prerequisites, and overall program quality.
Courses that appear as matches in Transferology have already been reviewed and determined to be equivalent.
Accreditation Requirements
For Carroll University to award transfer credit, the institution where the course was taken must be accredited by one of the following agencies:
- Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) – Western Association of Schools and Colleges
- Higher Learning Commission (HLC)
- Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE)
- New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE)
- Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU)
- Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)
- WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC)
How can I determine if a course I want to take elsewhere is equivalent to a Carroll course?
Course equivalencies can be found using the Transferology website under the Find a Replacement tab.
If a course I intend to take IS found using the Transferology website, do I need to submit an Transfer Credit Approval Form (TCAP) in order to take the course?
A Transfer Credit Approval Form is required for all transfer coursework for current students only.
Please note: To transfer credits to Carroll University, you must complete your final 32 credits at Carroll, including at least one-fourth of the credits in your major and minor. All transfer coursework must be completed with a grade of C- or better to be accepted toward graduation. A Transfer of Credit Approval Form is required for all transfer coursework.
What if I don’t see my school or course in Transferology?
Students can reach out to admissions to see how any unevaluated courses could potentially transfer to Carroll. Students are strongly advised to consult with Carroll's Office of Admission for current program requirements and with Carroll's catalog for admission criteria and transfer credit policies. Transfer equivalencies are subject to change.
Is there a limit to how many credits I can transfer in?
Yes. A maximum of 72 credits may transfer from a two-year institution, and/or with an associate degree. There is no limit to the number of credits eligible for transfer from a four-year institution and/or with a bachelor's degree.
How do I order my official transcript?
You can order your official transcript from Carroll through parchment using this link: https://www.parchment.com/u/registration/76534/institution. Note: Official transcripts generally cost $10.
Can a failing grade be replaced with a transfer grade?
No. A failing grade earned at Carroll University cannot be replaced with a transfer grade from another institution. However, the grade may be replaced by retaking the course at Carroll.
How are differing credit amounts handled?
Transfer credit is awarded based on the number of credits the course carried at the previous institution, as long as it meets Carroll’s transfer requirements.
What does elective credit mean, and how does it apply?
Elective credit counts toward the 128 total credits required for graduation, but it may not apply directly to your major, minor, or core requirements.
When is the PIO Core curriculum exempt?
The PIO Core is typically waived for students who have already earned a previous associate or bachelor’s degree.
Are online courses accepted?
Yes, online courses may be accepted for transfer as long as they meet Carroll’s transfer requirements and are approved as equivalent. Courses are evaluated using the same equivalency criteria outlined in question one.
