Major: Mathematics
Minor: Secondary Education

What made you choose this major?

I decided that I wanted to major in mathematics because I’ve been devoted to mathematics all my life, especially in high school. Throughout my high school career, I had friends ask for my assistance with mathematical contents from algebra to pre-calculus and it was rewarding seeing the satisfaction in their faces. From this experience, I realized that I could make a difference within the lives of students by being a mathematics teacher and bring a new dynamic to the mathematical world.

How has what you’ve learned prepared you for your future?

Taking mathematics courses helped prepare me to become a critical thinker and take the content beyond the classroom. Working alongside my classmates outside of the classroom helped improve my mathematical vocabulary and presentation skills. I’m very grateful courses are designed to help me improve my personal skills as well as professional skills.

What opportunities have you had to work closely with a faculty member and what impact has that had on your education?

My mathematics capstone course consisted of a small number of students, which allowed for classroom discussions based on the content. I found it beneficial that the professor took the time to ensure we were getting the most of our education. In other words, he taught the material at a steady pace which allowed for the class to truly understand the material before moving forward to the next stage in the curriculum.

What’s one unique experience you’ve had relating to the coursework for your major?

Out of all of the mathematical lectures I had here at Carroll University, I was intrigued with learning matrixes in the linear algebra course. Prior to the end of the semester, the class was divided into groups and we were given the opportunity to apply our learning to a real-life application. My research project provided me with an idea of how I can utilize this material in everyday life.

How has Carroll enriched your growth as a person outside of the skills you’re learning in the classroom?

Being a member of the orientation program and mathematics organizations provided me with opportunities to improve my leadership and interpersonal skills. Being able to plan and facilitate events was an absolute pleasure to give back to the Carroll community. Being involved in mathematics organizations allowed me to explore material that I could not learn within a regular classroom. During orientation, I learned so much about myself through collaboration with my colleagues in order to make a difference within the lives of incoming students, as opposed to sitting in a traditional classroom. I am grateful for having the opportunity to make a difference with the community and changing the lives of students one step at a time.

Why did you choose to attend Carroll University?

I am very happy that I chose Carroll University to achieve my goal as a mathematics teacher. Through building new friendships and relationships with professors helped transformed me into an outgoing individual. Having small class sizes and one-on-one attention allows me to achieve my academic goals through collaboration amongst my classmates and professors. Outside of the classroom, Carroll University provides many involvement opportunities in which I was able to learn about myself as a person. Choosing Carroll University was the easiest decision I ever made and I would not trade this experience for anything else.
