Reading Teacher License
Develop expertise through a sequence of focused courses
The reading teacher license program is aligned with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Content Standards, the International Reading Association and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) guidelines. This professional learning community model offers a supportive and interactive environment for current classroom teachers to broaden their understanding and skills related to research-based reading assessment, evaluation and instruction.
Graduate students who have an initial Wisconsin teaching license and two years of full-time teaching experience can qualify for an additional license as K-12 Reading Teachers by completing Carroll's Reading Teacher sequence. Students seeking this license must earn a grade of B or higher in each reading course and must have an overall minimum reading course grade point average of 3. Successful completion of this 15-credit program and the Foundations of Reading exam lead to a Wisconsin Reading Teacher License.
Credits from the reading license program can be applied to a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. Candidates completing a M.Ed. program may be eligible for financial aid.
- Classes meet at Carroll University's Center for Graduate Studies
- Courses are specially timed in summer with weekly or weekend delivery options during fall and spring terms
The following courses compose the graduate level requirements for the license:
- EDU674: Literacy in the Secondary School Content Areas (3 credits)
- EDU675: Emergent Literacy (3 credits)
- EDU676: Literacy in the Middle Childhood Grades (3 credits)
- EDU677: Issues in Children's and Adolescent Literature ((3 credits)
- EDU678: Reading Assessment in the K-12 Classroom (3 credits)
