Carroll University art major Sarah Honaker has been selected as one of nearly 1,000 American undergraduate students nationwide to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. The Gilman Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, providing experiences in diverse cultures and languages.

Sarah was accepted into a semester-long study abroad program at the Florence University of the Arts in spring 2018. Her Gilman Scholarship will provide $4,000 towards program tuition and fees, room and board, books, local transportation, health insurance and international airfare.

“When I found out I won the Gilman Scholarship, I felt so honored and thankful to be considered because having financial security next semester is a gift that I am extremely grateful for. My goals for studying abroad are to become more familiar with the language and lifestyle while living in Florence and bringing back a new worldview. I know I will come back to Carroll a stronger person and want to focus all of my knowledge acquired from my classes and experiences abroad to set me apart in the job field when I come back for my senior year,” Sarah shared.

Gilman Scholarship applicants are reviewed based on the following criteria:

  • Academic preparedness and impact on student’s academic and career trajectory
  • Diversity of background and experience
  • Choice of program and destination
  • Impact to community
  • Critical need language award

Since 2001, the Gilman Scholarship has enabled more than 25,000 outstanding Americans of diverse backgrounds to engage in a meaningful educational experience abroad. The program has successfully broadened U.S. participation in study abroad, while emphasizing countries and regions where fewer Americans traditionally study. Learn more about the Gilman Scholarship.
