A new partnership with Carroll University will provide students from Milwaukee’s Cristo Rey Jesuit High School with real-world experiences as they work on the university campus during the school year.

The high school, on Milwaukee’s southside, features an innovative work-study program in which students at the school work five days each month at companies in the community. At these workplaces, the students increase self-confidence, gain exposure to the world of work and acquire practical skills that can benefit their future careers.

Carroll University is sponsoring four students this year. They’ll work in the campus center, on the football team, in the office of partnerships and innovation and in advancement—all departments that typically utilize students workers.

“We hope our students gain an appreciation of all the career possibilities in higher education,” said Joe Mazza, the director of Cristo Rey’s corporate work study program. “Additionally, as a college-prep high school, we also want our students to become accustomed to being on a university campus, knowing that this will be the next step in their education.”

According to the school’s website, 100 percent of Crist Rey’s graduates go on to college.
