For the first time, Carroll University has received a grant from the Brady Corporation Foundation which will support its STEM for Girls/STEM para Chicas summer camp. The camp has seen continued growth and interest over the years as careers in the STEM fields have become more popular and in demand.

Over the past seven years, Carroll has partnered with the School District of Waukesha to offer a single evening STEM for girls event that has impacted over 900 girls. In 2017 the event was expanded into an immersive week-long day camp offered at no cost, for 30 participants in grades 4-8 from the Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, Waukesha and Kettle Moraine School Districts.

“We’re extremely appreciative that the Brady Corporation Foundation grant will allow us to continue to provide this important learning opportunity for all girls interested in STEM,” said Susan Lewis, professor of biology and marine biology and director of faculty development. “Eliminating the economic barriers for students to participate is a critical goal of our program.

Following the successful pilot year, the $5,000 grant will help grow the camp to serve twice as many students and allow for the development of more detailed curriculum in STEM-related skills preparing students for success at the high school and college level.

Carlo J. Emanuele, director sales for Brady North America & Brady Foundation Board of Directors added, “As a company, Brady is focused on innovation. It's important to us to make sure the next generation is ready to take on careers in science and technology. We are pleased to support the Carroll University STEM for Girls summer camp to ensure that girls in our community have access to these opportunities."

During the camp students will spend time learning about all aspects of STEM. Last summer, they were able to explore environmental science topics like insects, water quality, nature and disease and how to use satellites for search and rescue in hands-on experiences. Additionally, camp participants will benefit from near-peer mentors – local high school and college students who will work with them during the week.
