William A. Ganfield Fellow Scholarship

Application Deadline: January 2, 2024

The Ganfield family name and their legacy on the Carroll campus is great. This scholarship honors the service and dedication of Dr. William Arthur Ganfield, who was professor of history at Carroll from 1904-1915, and president of Carroll College from 1921-1939. Born in Dubuque County, Iowa, Ganfield graduated from Cornell College and the McCormick Theological Seminary, and studied at the University of Chicago graduate school. He served as pastor in Green Bay from 1901-1904 before his service at Carroll as professor of history and political science. In 1915, he left Carroll for a brief time serving as president of Centre College. He returned to Carroll in 1921 accepting the presidency, a position he held until his retirement in 1939. Ganfield was a member of the Republican National Advisory Committee and in 1922 ran for the United States Senate, losing to Robert M. LaFollette. Dr. Ganfield and his wife, Clara, had five children who attended Carroll; Dorothy Ganfield Fowler '23, A. Boardman Ganfield '24, Elizabeth Ganfield Laatsch '27, Ruth Ganfield '31, and Jane Ganfield '32. Siblings, Dorothy Ganfield Fowler and A. Boardman Ganfield, established this scholarship in their father's memory paying tribute to his love for and to Carroll. Awards are given to recognize students with superior academic ability, diverse interests, and strong communication skills with preference to those majoring in history with expanding support to also consider worthy political science, global studies, and religious studies majors.

William A. Ganfield Fellowship Program

Each year, a small number of outstanding first-year students are invited by the Carroll University Department of History, Global Studies, Political Science, and Religious Studies to become Ganfield fellows. Students selected for this prestigious program will enjoy a wide range of special learning opportunities:

  • Fellows will work closely with a member of the faculty to design a curricular plan that will help them achieve their educational and career goals.
  • Fellows will receive a scholarship of $1,250. This award will be renewable for three years, provided the student maintains a minimum grade point average of 3.00 and continues to major in global studies, history, political science or religious studies.
  • Fellows eligible for campus employment will be offered positions in the Carroll University Department of History, Political Science, and Religious Studies.
  • Fellows will be encouraged to participate in intensive learning experiences beyond the campus. For example, a student might study in Great Britain, Germany, China, France or Mexico. Students might also undertake an internship in an area of special interest and/or participate in a public service activity.
  • Fellows will complete the published major field requirements of the program. In addition, they will participate in a special seminar that investigates controversial topics. Our expectation is that this program will prepare Ganfield fellows to pursue lives of professional accomplishment. We anticipate that they will be among Carroll's most distinguished graduates.
