Description: Named to honor the former U.S. senator's pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, the George J. Mitchell Scholarships are intended to familiarize and connect the next generation of American leadership with the island of Ireland. These scholarships support one year of graduate study in any discipline offered by an institution of higher learning in Ireland or Northern Ireland.

Mitchell Scholarship Applicant Requirements:
- U.S. citizenship
- Prior to application, applicants must choose where they wish to apply

- Application should include:
- Five letters of recommendation
- 1000-word personal statement
- Academic transcripts
**Applicants who are full-time students at the time of application must obtain an institutional endorsement and three of the five letters of recommendation must come from persons with whom the candidate has done academic work. Those applicants who are not full-time students do not need an institutional endorsement, and of the five letters of recommendation required, only two must be from persons with whom the candidate has done academic work
