About Chemistry

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the chemistry major, students will:

  1. Understand the basic definitions, concepts and relationships of chemistry.
  2. Develop advanced skills in evaluating library searches for primary and other literature.
  3. Understand fundamental laboratory analyses and safety protocols.
  4. Perform quantitative and qualitative scientific analyses.
  5. Understand the basic theory of and use of modern instrumentation.
  6. Use computers for chemical applications including technical writing, modeling, data collecting and processing, and database searching.
  7. Prepare effective written scientific reports and oral presentations for professional audiences.
  8. Work cooperatively in problem solving situations.
  9. Understand the benefits and problems of modern chemistry for our society.

Curriculum

  • Three emphases are offered, including ACS-Approved, Pre-Health Sciience-Professional and Forensic Science.
  • Courses are offered in the basic areas of inorganic, organic, analytical, physical and biochemistry, and are supplemented by industrial internships, studies in laboratory safety and health, and independent research.
  • The department is approved by the Committee on Professional Training of the American Chemical Society.

Internships/Research Opportunities

  • Students can apply what they have learned and make valuable contacts for the future.
  • Carroll’s location near Milwaukee ensures numerous internship opportunities.
  • Examples of internships include W.H. Brady & Co., Sigma-Aldrich Corp., Great Lakes Instrument Co., S.C. Johnson Wax, Pittsburgh Paints and Essential Industries.
  • On-campus and off-campus internship and research opportunities are available during academic years and summers.
  • International research opportunities in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland are provided via Thronson International Research Program.

  • Modern scientific instrumentation is incorporated into all courses.
  • Faculty are exceptional and have diverse specialties.
  • The Student Affiliate Chapter of the American Chemical Society hosts guest lecturers, field trips and provides student mentoring.
  • Students can present research projects at regional and national American Chemical Society meetings.
  • Students can participate in international field studies.
  • Small class sizes allow for close contact between students and professors.
  • There is ample opportunity for interaction with professors and students in class and in the laboratory.
