Welcome

Are you fascinated by stories about castles, knights and ladies? Or perhaps you want to know more about the history of the Catholic Church, or the development of democratic institutions such as Parliament? The Medieval and Renaissance minor will teach you about all these topics and more. It is an interdisciplinary minor incorporating approaches from various areas of scholarship within the humanities, such as history, philosophy, English and religious studies, allowing students to develop a comprehensive understanding of Medieval and Renaissance Europe. It fits well with majors both within the humanities as well as from other programs, from business to exercise science, allowing those who complete the minor to develop the communication and critical thinking skills employers prize.

The student who successfully completes the minor will take five courses drawn from the following lists. Students must take at least one course from each of the three areas of concentration (literature, history, religion and philosophy).

Literature

ENG 240 British Literature I: Medieval to 1740
ENG 301 Chaucer
ENG 305 Shakespeare
ENG 323 Renaissance English Literature

HIS 254 Topics in Medieval European History
HIS 316 Renaissance and Reformation Europe
