WAUKESHA, WIS.— Carroll University will host the annual assembly of the Wisconsin Division of the United Nations Association/U.S.A. "Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Middle East: Policy Options and Implications for the United Nations" will be Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Humphrey Memorial Chapel and Art Center, 238 N. East Ave., Waukesha. Two programs and lunch are $25, programs only are $15. All students can attend the lectures free. The featured speaker will be Dr. Juan Cole, professor of history at the University of Michigan. Cole has many years of experience, research and language skills in the Middle East, and has been a frequent guest on TV and radio. He has written widely, speaking out for clarity and understanding of what our presence in this area of the world means, who are the people, the leaders, the powers we are fighting. The election in Afghanistan is scheduled for Aug. 20; Cole will be open to questions regarding results and meanings of the election, and other issues. His lecture will be at 1 p.m.
The morning session will deal with the current nuclear threats major and would-be-major powers exert over peace issues.
