PASOS student honored as young achiever by UCC

May 5, 2017

Carroll University PASOS student recognized as young achiever by United Community Center

Five young achievers will be acknowledged at the United Community Center’s (UCC) 47th Anniversary Dinner on Friday, May 5 as part of the Badger Mutual Wall of Fame. In addition, their pictures as well as brief overviews of their accomplishments will be framed and hung on the hallway walls of the UCC and Bruce-Guadalupe Community School.

One honoree, has a special connection to Carroll University. Viviana Sanchez never shies away from a challenge, working hard to maintain a high GPA while balancing all of her extracurricular activities, including participation in the Dance Academy of Mexico for the past six years. Viviana is a member of Student Council, is looking forward to participating in Preparing and Advancing Students for Opportunities in Science Program at Carroll University (PASOS), and plays volleyball, basketball, and soccer. Viviana hopes to one day become a Labor and Delivery Nurse in order to help bring future leaders into the world.

Started in 2015, future college students had the opportunity to receive a head start towards pursuing a career in nursing, physical therapy or the physician assistant field. The program known as PASOS – Preparing and Advancing Students for Opportunities in Science – gives eighth grade students from Bruce-Guadalupe Community School the chance to gain exposure to in-demand careers in health and medical sciences. Student participants, many of whom would be first-generation college students, are accepted into PASOS based on test scores, grades, recommendations and essay submissions.

Carroll University and UCC have a long partnership that extends far beyond education in the classroom. In addition to education, UCC provides healthcare to their students at the UCC Health Clinic, which offers students basic medical examinations free of charge. The clinic is fully operated by nursing student interns from Carroll University and run by a full-time nurse supervisor.
