'Grass, Food & Lodging reunites at Carroll

WAUKESHA, WIS.— A local band established in 1975 will reunite for a concert as part of Carroll University’s 2013 Summer Arts Series. ’Grass, Food & Lodging will perform at 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 23. This event is free and open to the public.

The outdoor concert will be on the lawn in front of Main Hall on East Avenue. If weather requires, the concert will be held in Shattuck Music Center, 218 N. East Ave. Some seating will be provided, but guests are encouraged to bring blankets, picnic baskets and non-alcoholic beverages. Food and beverages will be available for purchase from Carroll University Dining Services.

For almost five years during the late 1970s, ’Grass, Food & Lodging brought their brand of Bluegrass to Milwaukee, the Midwest, and eventually, national and international audiences. The members called it quits over a two-week, multi-concert goodbye at their home base club, Blue River Café.

More than 30 years later, Bluegrass is back to the region and the band will regroup for a June concert series. Once again, with blazing fiddle breakdowns and beautifully harmonized ballads, they will recreate their distinct sound. In addition to the Carroll concert on June 23, ’Grass, Food & Lodging will perform at Café Carpe in Fort Atkinson on June 20, and at Milwaukee’s Shank Hall on June 22.

Original members Dede Wyland, guitar; Peter Knupfer, fiddle; Ken Finkel, banjo; and Jim Price, mandolin; will join Jon Peik on bass. Local musician Tom Schwark will supply basso to the group’s a cappella renderings just as he did in the band’s heyday. For biographies and more information, visit
