Founders' Day Convocation
WAUKESHA, WIS.—The Rev. Dr. Deborah Block, pastor at Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Milwaukee, will be the keynote speaker at Carroll University’s Founders’ Day celebration on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014. She will discuss “Humanity: Around the Table.” The event begins at 11 a.m. in Shattuck Music Center, 218 N. East Ave., Waukesha. It is free and open to the public.
Block’s theme fits with Carroll’s Year of Humanity, an interdisciplinary exploration of how war, ethics, science, religion, hunger, abuse and lack of civility affect our humanity, both individually and collectively.
A 1974 Carroll graduate, Block was one of a small group of women students at that time who pursued the ordained ministry. She received a master’s degree from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1977 and a doctorate from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago in 1989.
Her ordained ministry began in 1978 at Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Milwaukee, where she now serves as the pastor and head of staff. She has written for a new lectionary commentary series, “Feasting on the Word” and the companion “Feasting on the Gospels” (2014). Block also is a contributor to “Celebrating Our Call: Ordination Stories of Presbyterian Women” (2006), “Proclaiming the Great Ends of the Church” (2010) and “A Spiritual Life: Poets, Prophets, and Preachers” (2011).
Block is a member of the Carroll University Board of Trustees and was involved with a recent study of spiritual life at the university. She chairs the board of trustees of McCormick Seminary and also has served as chair of the board of the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation.
Founders’ Day recognizes those responsible for Carroll's incorporation on Jan. 31, 1846, and those whose outstanding contributions help keep the university strong.
