Modern Language Classes and Tutoring

The Carroll Academy, in cooperation with the faculty of the college’s Modern Languages and Literatures Program, is pleased to offer modern language classes and tutoring. Students ages 2 through adult are welcome. Current offerings include Spanish, French, Chinese and Russian.

Students seek language instruction for a variety of reasons. Some desire to advance their current skills gained through classroom learning, while others are more interested in personal enrichment. Some desire to learn a language from their own cultural heritage to converse with family members or prepare for a trip overseas. Others seek to strengthen their skills to achieve greater proficiency for business and/or professional reasons.

Curriculum
Instructors design their curriculum based on the needs of the student(s). Units have ranged from basic skills such as letters, numbers, simple greetings, etc., to writing, reading stories or newspaper articles, and speaking. Students might prefer to focus on oral communication in which the instructor will spend more time with them in conversation. For these students, teachers or guests who are native speakers might be invited to participate in some sessions.

Materials
Children’s classes and tutorials often include worksheets, flash cards, memory games, songs, audio stories and/or books. Adult classes and tutorials are flexible and use a variety of techniques to accomplish the desired outcomes.

Individual Tutoring
One-to-one instruction enables tutors to tailor lessons according to the student’s strengths and weaknesses. Tutors strive to balance academic challenge and encouragement as they assist students in accomplishing their goals.

Small Group and Class Instruction
Groups of two or more students may participate in foreign language instruction. Families might wish to take lessons at the same time. In addition, small groups of children from a home school pod, school, neighborhood or church might want to take lessons together.
