Carroll University’s 2025 Homecoming, Reunion and Family Weekend will feature a special guest in a prominent role. And this alum is “only” 80 years younger than the 180-year-old university itself. George Socha ’47, who recently turned 100 years old (!), will be honored as the parade marshal for the Homecoming Parade—an especially fitting tribute to his lifelong connection to the university and his enduring Pioneer spirit.

George certainly appreciates the honor, but his wry sense of humor still wins out on most days, even after a century worth of birthdays, saying, "You must have run out of good options!"

Indeed, George isn't a good option. He's actually a fantastic one!

A biology graduate, George’s time at Carroll was filled with involvement and leadership as a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, the Choir, and the Beta Beta Beta academic society. He was also part of a true Pioneer legacy family, with his sister Beverly J. (Socha) Wilke ’54 and brother-in-law Harris H. Wilke ’52 both attending Carroll.

George’s inquiring mind and dedication to lifelong learning shaped his career as an expert with Davis Instrument, where he specialized in ensuring the reliable performance of precision scientific equipment. Known for his problem-solving skills, he excelled at diagnosing and repairing microscopes, centrifuges and other instruments vital to research and discovery.

His love of nature remained a defining thread throughout his life. With his family, George made a lasting contribution to the community by donating 140 acres of land in Dane County, Wisconsin, now preserved as the Joyce M. Baer & George J. Socha Conservancy. This beautiful natural space ensures that future generations will be able to experience the outdoors as he so deeply valued.

In addition to his conservation efforts, George has shown extraordinary dedication to supporting Carroll students. He established the George J. Socha Endowed Scholarship Fund, which provides ongoing support to biology majors who share his passion for science and discovery.

As George celebrates this milestone birthday, his legacy of curiosity, generosity and commitment to education continues to inspire both the Carroll community and all who benefit from his vision.
