John P. Macy '77

2016 Distinguished Alumnus Award for Community Service

John Macy's work as managing partner and president of Arenz, Molter, Macy, Riffle, & Larson fills his days with representation of more than 50 Wisconsin municipalities but he still finds time to commit countless volunteer hours within his community.

Macy dedicated more than 1,050 hours to Waukesha County's nonprofit sector in 2014 alone. On almost any given day, he can currently be found volunteering for one of the following agencies: Waukesha County Community Association, Republican Party of Waukesha County or Delta Rho Upsilon Fraternity.

He has also served as past chair of the Sussex Teen Center Improvement Corporation, as executive director of the Stop Underage Drinkers Program through the Waukesha County Tavern League, past chair of the Mediation Center of Waukesha County, and past chair of the Law Explorer Post Committee. Additionally, he serves as a Waukesha County Court Commissioner and was elected in 2013 as chairman of the Republican Party of Waukesha County.

Macy's service extended over the past years to other entities including the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Wisconsin, and the Uniform Law Commission. His volunteer work with American Bar Association was extensive having served on the Board of Governors for 12 years and for the Solo and Small Firm Division for 25 years rising through the ranks to the position of Chair of the Division. His committee assignments with the State Bar of Wisconsin have included volunteer work on almost every committee of the Bar including the Chair of the Board of Governors as well as a High School Mock Trial Tournament judge, We the People Program judge, and National Moot Court judge. The State Bar of Wisconsin recognized him with its Wisconsin Outstanding Leadership Award in 1995-1996 as well as other awards in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2004, and 2010. He was also the recipient of the Sussex Teen Center Service Award as well as numerous other awards for his volunteer work.

The Wisconsin Law Journal recognized Macy in 2009 with its Leader in the Law Award. He is former president of the Waukesha County Bar Association, which recognized him in 1991 with its Award for Dedicated Service and in 2008 as a Distinguished Member.

Other honors include Municipal Lawyer of the Year, Menomonee Falls Wall of Recognition, Who's Who in American Law for 12 years, and Who's Who in America for 10 consecutive years. He has been listed for the last six years in publications featuring the Best Lawyers in America and Top Attorneys in Wisconsin for the last four years.

After graduating cum laude from Carroll in 1977 with a bachelor's degree in political science and English, Macy went on to earn his Juris Doctorate in Law from Marquette University Law School in 1980.

He participated on Carroll's Alumni Council from 1991-2002, as a class agent from 1994–1997, on the President's Advisory Council since 2007, Friends of Carroll College from 1991–2001, and as an active alumnus member of the Delta Rho Upsilon Fraternity. He has served the Delta Rho Upsilon Alumni Association as president, vice president, past president, and on its board of directors between 1979-1990 and 1998-present. He also serves on Carroll's Pre-Law Advisory Council.
