Harold '41 & Martha (Miller '43) Anschuetz
1995 Distinguished Alumni Award for Service to Carroll
In recognition of the decades of service to the Carroll campus and community at large, Harold ‘41 & Martha (Miller ‘43) Anschuetz were recognized with the Distinguished Alumni Award. In their community, Harold was a staunch volunteer as a member of the Service Corps of Retired Executives and International Executives Service Corps in which they spent 3 months in Grenada and a stint in the Caribbean. They were both also very active with AFS (American Field Service) where they hosted several exchange students and helped coordinate major fundraisers for the organization.
Their church community also benefitted from their generous commitment of time. Harold and Martha joined the Brookfield Congregational Church in April 1962. They were youth advisors, supper club hosts, and housed the associate pastor while she located her own housing. Martha also served on the board of the Christian World Mission, Women’s Fellowship, Food Pantry volunteer, the first woman Moderator from 1975-1976, board of deacons, and chairperson of the memorial & designated gifts committee. Harold was a member of the board of deacons, vice chairman of the membership and special services committee, vice moderator in 1970, nominating committee, board of trustees and member of the church golf league.
The Anschuetz’s service to Carroll is even more extensive. They were the 1988 chair-couple of the Annual Fund. In 1990, the worked on the fall phonathon and in 1992 they were Old Main Society team captains. They were gracious hosts in holding yearly alumni events in Florida and held several other volunteer posts to help the alumni and development efforts at Carroll.
They chaired each of their respective Golden Pioneer Committees and raised money for the class gift. They were both on the Alumni Council—Harold from 1968-1971 and Martha from 1982-1987. Harold worked on the Alumni “C” Club. Martha was a class agent and worked on the Distinguished Alumni Award Selection Committee for a number of years. They have also been lifetime supporters of Carroll Athletics.
Harold graduated from Carroll in 1941 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in physics. He was president of Phi Theta Pi during his student tenure, as well as a member of the football team, a member of Interfraternity Council, YMCA cabinet and a physics assistant. Martha graduated in 1943 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration. She was in the Alpha Kappa sorority, secretary of the Intersorority Council, YWCA cabinet and involved in intramural sports.
In addition to their personal connection to Carroll, all three of their children also attended Carroll: Harold (Rick) Anschuetz ‘67, Jan (Anschuetz ‘70) Kuntz, and David D. Anschuetz ‘73. Harold died in 2008 at the age of 89 and Martha died in 2018 at the age of 97.
