Changing Your Major

If you are questioning your decision on a major for any reason, you are not alone. Over 80% of students who enter college with an intended major change their major at least once. There are many reasons students change their major including: lack of interest in the academic area of study, inability to perform at the level required of a given program, or appeal of a different academic field. As you take part in coursework and campus activities, you are exposed to new people, academic disciplines and ways of thinking. This may lead to you finding a major that is a better fit with your interests, skills, abilities, and values.

The Academic Advisors in the Center for Academic Advising Services are here to help you find your way to a major you are passionate about. We want you to be able to make the right decision for you, knowing all aspects of changing your major including academic curriculum, policies, and time to completion with the major change. We will walk with you through the process of changing your major so that you have an informed and easy transition to your new field of study.

Things to Consider While Changing Your Major

  • What is the reason you are contemplating a change in major?
  • What are the long-term effects, if any, of this change?
  • What are your interests, things you like or don't like? How do these interests play into the new major you are looking at?
  • What skills and abilities do you already possess? How can you use these skills and abilities within your new major?
  • What skills do you want? How will you be able to gain these skills in your new major?
  • What do you value? In yourself? In others? In your future place of employment or job? Do your values coincide with your new major?
  • What are you passionate about learning?
  • What are some of your career aspirations? Does your new major put you on a path to your desired career?
  • What courses will you need to take in your new major? What will your academic plan look like if you choose to change your major?
