The Reading Teacher Program (#1316) focuses on structured literacy practices, providing educators with the tools and expertise to address a variety of reading challenges. Graduates of this program are qualified to earn the Wisconsin Reading Teacher License.

Commitment to Literacy Excellence

As an IDA-accredited institution, Carroll is now also designated as an ACT 20 provider through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. This designation enables us to offer professional development in structured literacy to educators across Wisconsin. Our mission is to support teachers in improving literacy outcomes for all students, and this accreditation strengthens our ability to lead the charge in literacy education across the state.

What IDA Accreditation Means

IDA accreditation is an esteemed mark of excellence, signifying that Carroll University’s programs adhere to the highest standards in the science of reading and structured literacy. This rigorous accreditation process ensures that our programs meet or exceed standards developed by experts in the field. By aligning with IDA’s Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading (KPS), our programs offer a comprehensive framework to prepare educators with the skills necessary to teach reading effectively.

The Reading Teacher program is designed to provide candidates with two options:

  1. License only-candidates can complete 15-credits of coursework to qualify for the Reading Teacher (#1316) license.
  2. M.Ed. pathway-candidates may apply the 15-credits of coursework for the Reading Teacher program to a Master of Education degree with a concentration in Literacy. The M.Ed. is a 30-credit program and can be earned by pairing the Reading Teacher license with the Reading Specialist licensure coursework or the Dyslexia Interventionist coursework. The graduate program in education requires the completion of research related to the course of study. This experience allows candidates to study an issue in greater depth that is important to their professional interest or to improve practice.

Courses are scheduled one weekend per month on Friday night and Saturday mornings.

  • Candidates will participate in a hybrid model one weekend per month with virtual meetings on Friday evenings, and in-person meetings on Carroll’s campus on Saturday mornings.
