What made you choose this major?
For my political science major, as a senior in high school I took an American government and politics class where we prepared all year for our trip to Washington D.C. to interview policy makers, senators, representatives and NGOs alike regarding a topic of our interest. I chose to look into the topic of immigration as it encompassed the Spanish heritage. This experience catapulted my interests into the field of political science and social justice. I have always respected the value of foreign languages in education. The world is globalizing and in order to get ahead of the game, you have to be able to communicate to all likes of people, most often in various languages. The better you are at communicating, the better off you will be.
How has what you’ve learned prepared you for your future?
As a Carroll University graduate and former study abroad student in Italy, I have learned the value of an education and the sense of belonging. I dedicated my undergraduate education to the study of human rights, immigration and other social justice issues. I have taken many courses that encompass this curriculum including a final capstone research paper on human rights in Europe, a human rights course and an immigration course while abroad and a public policy course. As an intern for SOPHIA, I focused on educating the community on social justice issues and working closely with community leaders. I hope to use my experiences and education in a fulfilling way working closely with social justice issues.
What opportunities have you had to work closely with a faculty member and what impact has that had on your education?
The number one reason I decided to come to Carroll was the intimacy of the small class sizes. I have had incredible experiences in all of my classes and have been able to form relationships with my professors and fellow students alike. I am always able to ask questions and provide feedback and insight during class discussions and because of this, I feel as if I have gained a better education. Retention is important for the science and math fields but the ability to discuss and analyze is what makes a social science degree valuable. I have gained this ability to communicate effectively while at Carroll and intend to expand upon it as I prosper in my professional career.
What’s one unique experience you’ve had relating to the coursework for your major?
While abroad, I was provided with the opportunity to volunteer at the Joel Nafuma Refugee Center in Rome as a part of my education. This experience, working with at risk populations, has shaped the way I view the world and I aim to hopefully one-day work in this field of immigration and human rights in the future.
How has Carroll enriched your growth as a person outside of the skills you’re learning in the classroom?
I have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to double major in political science and Spanish as well as minor in global studies. In addition, I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad in Rome, Italy for a year to expand upon the social sciences aspect.
Why did you choose to attend Carroll University?
I have dedicated the last four years of my life and education to Carroll University and I recognize the opportunities that Carroll has provided to me. I look forward to sharing my experiences throughout my life. I decided to come to Carroll because it fit the qualities I looked for in a university and I value my time here immensely.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
In order to get the most out of your experience at Carroll, get involved. I was a part of the Carroll University Blaze Dance team and met two of my best friends throughout Carroll thanks to this program. You gain a sense of belonging by venturing out and meeting other students and make connections that can only benefit you in the future.
