Majors: Applied Physics (Pre-Engineering emphasis) and Theatre Arts

What made you choose this major?

I have always been passionate about theatre and science. Pursuing degrees in both applied physics and theatre and arts management has allowed me to merge both of my passions in a unique way.

How has what you’ve learned prepared you for your future?

As a theatre major, you are required to participate in various productions. Having been the lighting designer for more than 10 productions at Carroll University, I have a lot of hands-on experience. We use lighting technology that is current in the real world, so I know my skills will translate to on-the-job performance.

What opportunities have you had to work closely with a faculty member and what impact has that had on your education?

I love the small class sizes and one-on-one interactions with my professors. Whenever I do light design for a show that Professor Jennifer Dobby directs, we always set one day aside for the two of us to sit down and write cues for the entire show. This opportunity challenges me creatively and I always learn so much from the process.

What’s one unique experience you’ve had relating to the coursework for your major?

Lighting design is a lot more scientific than one would expect. There is a lot of electrical work and computer programming that goes along with it. I have been able to take the skills I developed in my math, science and computer courses and apply them to my lighting design.

How has Carroll enriched your growth as a person outside of the skills you’re learning in the classroom?

The Theatre Department and the Physics Department have been extremely helpful in working with me to double-major. My advisors in both departments are more than willing to assist me in making sure I meet the requirements to graduate on time.

Why did you choose to attend Carroll University?

I am happy with my choice of attending Carroll University. The small class sizes and the close relationships with my professors have allowed me to pursue two of my passions in a way that would not be possible anywhere else.
