Carroll University will be able to support and expand its golf program well into the future because of one alumnus who loved the game as much as the school itself. Donald F. Kelley ’51 has provided the university with a gift of $1.4 million to endow the program, which is the first all-program endowment for an athletic team in the school’s history.
Kelley enjoyed his time at Carroll for many reasons and attributed much of his success in life to the education he received there. After growing up in the Chicago, Ill. suburbs, the university became his home away from home while in school. He was a well-known graduate who enjoyed traveling back to Wisconsin to visit with other alumni, even making surprise trips to take in Homecoming festivities. He was extremely passionate about golf throughout his life, and most importantly believed that it was a sport anyone could participate in no matter their age. Kelley passed away in January 2017 and his family is pleased for his legacy to continue at one of the places he appreciated most.
“Don was a loyal and generous supporter of Carroll for many years and we are grateful that his gift will provide for our golf program well into the future,” said Stephen Kuhn, vice president of institutional advancement.
The endowment will support all operating expenses for both the men’s and women’s teams and the head coaches will carry the title of Donald F. Kelley ’51 Head Coach of Golf. The men’s golf program joined the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin in 1955 while the women’s program began in 1996. Both have seen much success over the years. The men’s golf team has won a conference championship seven times, most recently receiving the title in 2016, while the women’s team has taken the top spot four times with their last title coming in 2012 as well. In addition, numerous players have been named individual champions over the years.
