Carroll University has appointed Thomas Pahnke as dean of the College of Health Sciences. Pahnke, who is currently clinical associate professor of athletic training, exercise physiology and physical therapy, and chair of the department of human movement sciences at the university, has served as Carroll’s interim dean of the College of Health Sciences since September 2017. His appointment will officially begin July 1.

“Tom’s background includes more than 20 years of diverse healthcare experience as a clinician, program developer, faculty member and administrator in private medical clinic, nonprofit hospital systems and academic settings,” said Carroll University Provost Dr. Joanne Passaro. “His expertise, experience and familiarity with the university will be a true asset in this role as we embark upon a new strategic plan that will include building upon the premier health science programs offered at Carroll.”

Pahnke, who has served at Carroll University since 2006, was selected following an extensive national search. He began his career at Carroll teaching full time in the university’s physical therapy and athletic training programs. In 2008, Pahnke also assumed the role of department chair. In addition to teaching, his roles at Carroll have included serving as the director of the master of science in exercise physiology program. Pahnke’s accomplishments during his tenure have included assisting in reaccreditation of the doctor of physical therapy and athletic training programs, as well as development of the public health, graduate exercise physiology and occupational therapy programs.

Prior to Carroll University, Pahnke served as an athletic trainer and physical therapist for the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics at Purdue University, where he also began teaching. He started his career as a practicing physical therapist and athletic trainer, with experience in both outpatient physical therapy clinic and hospital-based settings.

“I’m honored to assume the position of dean of the College of Health Sciences. It will be a privilege to work with the passionate, motivated and innovative students, faculty and staff that have contributed to Carroll University’s reputation and tradition for excellence in health science education,” said Pahnke. “I look forward to the opportunity to not only work within the Carroll community, but also collaborate with the local health systems, community agencies and the public that we and our students ultimately serve.”
